The "dual" heritage of the Southwest towards green growth

Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Conservation Area was established in 1999, with over 100 ha of the core area and 1,800 ha of buffer zone, to safeguard and preserve the landscape, endemic flora and fauna of Dong Thap Muoi or the Plain of Reeds. The ecological reserve is called a dual heritage because resource reserves of the ecosystem are extremely attractive and almost original and unique of the "alum pocket - flood navel" in the South.

A representative of the Management Board of Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Conservation Area said that, according to studies, surveys and statistics, the ecological reserve is home to 156 plant species, 147 bird species, 34 fish species, eight amphibian species and 30 insect species.

The conservation area has invested in good infrastructure such as internal roads, canals, administration buildings and protective fences to create a natural and completely isolated living environment for animals and plants to grow and develop. Especially, to prevent destructive fishing by humans that give rise to loss of rare plant and animal genetic resources, the board facilitates the recovery of endemic natural resources in Dong Thap Muoi. According to the plan, Tien Giang province will continue to invest in expanding the area by 124 ha in the coming time.
