Agro-Forestry-Fishery Export Turnover Soars by Nearly 19%

Agro-forestry-fishery export turnover reached US$34.27 billion in January-July period, a year-on-year increase of 18.8 percent, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Especially, coffee products were exported to over 80 foreign countries for over US$3.1 billion. So far, Viet Nam is the biggest Robusta producer, ranking second in terms of quantity after Brazil.

The Viet Nam fruit and vegetables Association (VINAFRUIT) said that export turnover of fruits and vegetables was estimated at US$3.8 billion, an increase of 23.4 percent from the previous year. In 2024, the commodity is expected to pocket US$7 billion of export turnover, a record high over the past years.

In the first seven months of 2024, wood and product exports earned US$8.78 billion.

The MARD recommended local enterprises implement strict control measures to minimize risks when exporting products to international markets.

The Viet Nam Sanitary and Phytosanitary notification authority and enquiry point (Viet Nam SPS) reported that the number of warnings issued by the EU to Viet Nam has surged abnormally in the first half of this year, reaching a total of 57 warnings.

As a result of this surge, the EU has significantly ramped up border inspections of agricultural exports from Viet Nam.

Four products in particular—dragon fruit, chili peppers, okra, and durian—are now facing heightened scrutiny, with increased inspection rates of 30 percent, 50 percent, 50 percent, and 10 percent, respectively.

Unless immediate measures are taken, Viet Nam's agricultural and seafood exports may face increased border inspections by the EU, affecting export activities and competitiveness.

Of the 2,708 food safety alerts issued through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) system in the first half of 2024, Viet Nam was flagged 57 times, representing a 2.1 percent share.
