Phu Quy district, located in Binh Thuan province, is a frontier island that is strategically positioned in the defense of the country. It plays a crucial role in safeguarding the national sovereignty, territorial waters, islands, and the territorial integrity of the country. The local inhabitants, who are known for their sincerity, resilience and patriotism, stand united in their steadfast commitment to protect the sacred sovereignty of the country. Despite the economic challenges that have historically marked Phu Quy, the district is currently witnessing daily transformations.

Phu Quy encompasses three communes: Ngu Phung, Tam Thanh, and Long Hai. It spans a total land area of 1,791.25 hectares. The district is located over 100 km from Phan Thiet city, 540 km east of the Truong Sa Archipelago, 150 km northwest of Cam Ranh City in Khanh Hoa province, 330 km southwest of Con Dao, and 200 km south of Vung Tau City. It is home to a population of 27,080 individuals.
Phu Quy holds a significant economic and defense position due to its location on the route between the mainland and the Truong Sa Archipelago, and its proximity to international maritime routes. It serves as a floating base for offshore fishing fleets. Beyond its economic importance, Phu Quy Island is also a prime tourist destination within Binh Thuan province and the Southern Central region.
In recent years, with the backing of the central government and the province, and the concerted efforts of the entire political system and local populace, Phu Quy has maintained steady growth. Leveraging its inherent potential and advantages, and implementing appropriate solutions, the district has continually expanded its socioeconomic development. This has gradually improved the material and spiritual lives of its residents, strengthened national defense and security, and aided in the protection of aquatic resources, fishing grounds, and national sovereignty at sea.
In line with Vietnam’s Marine Strategy, the Phu Quy Party Committee has identified two main pillars for economic development: seafood production and processing, and tourism, trade and service. The district is committed to building a green, clean and beautiful Phu Quy, rich with cultural identity. The Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee has also planned to construct and robustly develop the economic zone of Phu Quy district.
In the coming time, Phu Quy district will need to implement consistent strategies to focus resources on the comprehensive development of the seafood industry. This will involve enhancing productivity, quality, and the effectiveness of exploitation, processing, and consumption of products. The district will also need to bolster the capacity of offshore fishing fleets, logistics services, and product processing at sea, while implementing policies to support fishermen and amplify their roles in protecting sea and island sovereignty.
Moreover, the district will construct and effectively execute the Phu Quy tourism development project, in accordance with the Phu Quy tourism development plan to 2030, ratified by the Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee. The district will continue to elevate the quality of transport services on the Phu Quy-Phan Thiet route and other sea routes, propose early investment in Phu Quy Airport, and vigorously develop service - trade, information - communication, and social services industries to meet local requirements.
Simultaneously, Phu Quy district will leverage capital sources to construct economic infrastructure for comprehensive development and rapid, sustainable growth. The district will propose investment and accelerate the construction progress of key projects, execute the Phu Quy urban area planning and management, enhance the orderly management of housing construction towards green - clean - beautiful urbanization, and develop craft villages. The district will also build symbols and maintain product brands such as Huynh De crab and pineapple for tourism development.
Phu Quy district will attract additional investment funds to develop tourism, effectively utilize tourism resources, and preserve the beautiful natural landscapes and traditional cultural identity of the Phu Quy people.
