Mr. Mai Van Tan, Director of the Department of Transport, Hau Giang province

In the past two decades, the transportation sector of Ha Giang province has continuously endeavored to support stronger socioeconomic development of the province. Could you please briefly introduce the outstanding achievements of this sector?

Looking back on 20 years of efforts, the transportation sector has made breakthrough contributions to Hau Giang province's rapid and sustainable socioeconomic development. Specifically, the formation of National Highway 61C has connected the province with other localities and opened a new economic corridor of Can Tho - Hau Giang - Kien Giang. The national highway network has been expanded from two routes with a length of about 80km to six routes with 158km of length to link Hau Giang province with other localities in the region. Besides, if the provincial road network has been increased from seven routes with a total length of 88km, hardly meeting transport needs of local businesses, to 15 routes with 286km of length. All bridges on these routes have been upgraded and newly constructed to meet the demand. The urban and rural road system has been dramatically expanded by nearly 15 times since the province was re-established. According to statistics, the density of national highways and provincial roads in Hau Giang province is 1.46 times and 1.52 times higher than the average of the Mekong Delta region. All have created an extensive area-wide network of transport infrastructure to meet the demand for merchandise trading and create a foundation and driving force for local and regional socioeconomic development.

So, could you tell more about the sector’s achievements in 2023 and its goals and tasks in 2024?

In 2023, Hau Giang province's transportation sector achieved the following results:

Closely coordinating with relevant agencies and localities and working with consulting units to complete the provincial planning approved by the Prime Minister; cooperating with units under the Ministry of Transport to host the groundbreaking ceremony for Can Tho - Hau Giang and Hau Giang - Ca Mau component projects. The Department of Transport of Hau Giang province urgently made efforts to complete necessary procedures to start all bidding packages of Project Component 3: Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang Expressway Construction Investment Project, phase 1.

The transport sector collaborated with related bodies to complete investment procedures to start key projects such as Provincial Road 925B, Provincial Road 927 and Provincial Road 929 to motivate, promote and develop industry, agriculture, urbanization and tourism in commensuration with existing potential. It coordinated with construction units to complete and operate two important roads: Expanded section of National Highway 1 from Nga Bay City, Hau Giang province to Chau Thanh district, Soc Trang province; and the expanded section of National Highway 61B from Vinh Tuong junction to Long My town.

Key goals and tasks in 2024:

The Prime Minister issued a decision to ratify the Hau Giang Provincial Planning by which the transport sector work will work out an investment plan for phased transport infrastructure development in line with the province’s existing resources and development goals. The sector will cooperate with the Maritime Administration to complete Hau Giang seaport planning as a premise to call for investment fund and develop logistics services. It will focus on completing key transportation projects with high quality, safety and efficiency; and implement expressway projects in the province on schedule as directed by the Prime Minister and the Provincial People's Committee. It will urgently start construction on strategic regional connection projects.

How will the province develop transportation infrastructure to meet the demand of people and businesses?

Currently, the national highway system has been constructed and expanded and the provincial road system basically connects smoothly with the national highway network and with localities. In particular, industrial clusters have complete transportation infrastructure systems directly linked to the national highway network. Generally, the transportation infrastructure network will need to be further improved in the coming time. At present, it basically meets the demand of people and businesses in the province.

Thank you very much!
