Agriculture is defined as a driving force to boost Bac Kan economy. The province effectively unlocks its potential advantages of land, climate, water and biodiversity; develops commercial agriculture; and focuses on investing in locally strong agricultural products to meet market demands and current standards.

Bac Kan is one of the leading provinces/cities in the country for the number of One Commune One Product (OCOP) items

Bac Kan has rich potential for expanding afforestation, processing planted timbers and growing and processing medicinal herbs as key sustainable, valuable products of the country.

Bac Kan province has made remarkable achievements in developing commercial agricultural production in recent years. Many locally advantageous crops like Khau Nua Lech sticky rice, Bao Thai sticky rice, canna, tobacco, tea, turmeric, apricot, orange, tangerine and fragrant green squash are highly productive, qualified to form concentrated raw material areas for commercial production. The province has indigenous products such as Bao Thai rice, Khau Nua Lech rice, japonica rice and fragrant green squash.

Many agricultural products have made the name of Bac Kan, including turmeric curcumin, turmeric starch, fragrant green squash, Japonica rice and hill chicken, which have been available in many supermarkets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Bac Kan's canna vermicelli products have been exported to Europe, while apricot and ginger products have been distributed to Japanese supermarkets.

The livestock sector has shifted from small-scale farming to concentrated farming by linking producers and investing in building modern barns.

Bac Kan has focused on developing agriculture as a key sector to boost economic development, effectively tapping potential advantages of land, climate, water and biodiversity, and developing commercial agriculture and forestry to meet market demands.

To tap potential, enhance the value and develop sustainable agriculture, Bac Kan province will plan and develop concentrated agricultural and wood production areas, direct production, develop value chains, and achieve sustainable development. The province will establish new agricultural cooperatives; effectively carry out the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Project to bolster trade promotion and seek markets for products; research and select typical products to build brands and popularize brands.

To develop effective production, Bac Kan province will continue to execute central and provincial policies; support and encourage agricultural and rural investment; support cooperatives and production households to invest in high-tech application to production and develop locally advantageous agricultural products. In addition, the locality will improve product quality, adopt VietGAP production models and organic standards, ensure food safety, and meet market requirements.

The Bac Kan Provincial Planning for the 2021 - 2030 period, with a vision to 2050, emphasizes the breakthrough stage of “Developing commercial agriculture and forestry and gradually building a high-tech agricultural model.” To realize this goal, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with relevant agencies and localities to advise the Provincial People's Committee to issue Decision 2732/QD-UBND dated December 31, 2019 on ratification of the Bac Kan agricultural restructuring project in a bid to increase added value and sustainable development in 2020 - 2025, with a vision to 2035. At the same time, the department advised the committee to issue Resolution 10-NQ/TU dated April 22, 2021 on developing commercial agriculture and forestry, expanding production cooperation along the value chain, and accelerating new rural construction in 2021 - 2025.

The consistent consultation on development and promulgation of agricultural documents is implemented from the provincial to grassroots levels to create consensus of the entire political system in developing agricultural and forest production in the province.
