Cultivating and Fortifying Vietnam-Laos Special Solidarity

A high-level meeting between the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP), co-chaired by CPV General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and LPRP General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith, took place in Hanoi on February 26, 2024.

This significant event served to fortify and deepen the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, States, and peoples of Vietnam and Laos.

During the meeting, the leaders updated each other on the status of their respective Party and country, encompassing Party building and socioeconomic development. They exchanged perspectives on global and regional situations and topics of mutual interest, evaluated the outcomes of bilateral cooperation between the two Parties and States in recent times, and concurred on principal cooperation directions for the future.

The two leaders expressed profound delight and appreciation for the deepening, substantive, and efficacious cooperation between Vietnam and Laos across all sectors. They noted the continued strengthening of political ties, the efficient promotion of defense-security, and the positive transformations in the realms of economy, culture, education, and science and technology.

They extended congratulations to each other on their respective significant and comprehensive accomplishments in national construction and development, as well as in the implementation of congressional resolutions. They expressed gratitude for the sincere support and assistance they have mutually provided over time.

Both leaders underscored the historical tradition of closeness and mutual assistance, affirming that the Vietnam-Laos relationship is an invaluable asset of the two nations, a historical necessity, and the greatest source of strength for both Parties and countries. They emphasized the need to nurture and pass this relationship on to future generations.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong affirmed that the relationship always plays a particularly important role and is a top priority in Vietnam's foreign policy while underscoring a number of key contents to strengthen the bilateral relations in the coming time.

Agreeing with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s opinions, General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith affirmed the strategic importance and significance of the bilateral ties in the security and growth of each country, and for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

Also at the meeting, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Lao counterpart Sonexay Siphandone expressed high regard for the outcomes of cooperation in various sectors including economy, trade, investment, culture, education, science and technology, and defense and security. They proposed specific strategies for enhancing bilateral cooperation in the future.

In light of the current circumstances, both sides concurred that the two Parties and nations need to further cultivate good traditions, reinforce solidarity, foster close coordination and mutual support, and develop political relations. They agreed to bolster the pillars of cooperation in defense, security, and foreign affairs, create breakthroughs in economic cooperation, and intensify partnerships in education, culture, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges, all while leveraging the potential and strengths of each country. Emphasis was placed on cooperation between Party bodies, ministries, central agencies, National Assembly agencies, and localities of the two countries.

Both sides stressed the need to promote the effectiveness of existing mechanisms, continue innovating and improving the efficiency of cooperation in all fields, and build new appropriate mechanisms to further reinforce Vietnam-Laos special solidarity for the practical benefits of each country’s people and for peace, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
