On December 20, 2016, the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) held the inauguration ceremony of Lai Chau hydropower plant Nam Nhun district, Lai Chau province, 10 months ahead of schedule set by the National Assembly of Vietnam.

The VND35.7 billion hydropower plant is a project of special national importance and the third largest hydropower plant on the Da River, after Son La and Hoa Binh hydropower plants. The facility will supply 4.7 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually to the national power grid, prevent flooding in the rainy season, supply water for the Red River Delta in the dry season and contribute to northwest socio-economic development.

The multi-purpose project recognises the remarkable growth of personnel, engineers and workers of Vietnamese power and machinery industries as they undertake works from planning, design, construction and installation to equipment synchronisation, monitoring, management and operation.

The project will ensure energy security of the nation, and boost socio-economic development of Lai Chau province in particular and Vietnam in general. In addition to increasing incomes for the State Budget, the power plant will facilitate residential zone arrangement and construction, particularly construction of resettlement areas according to new countryside standards and traffic systems which play an important role in socio-economic development of Lai Chau province and the northwest region.
